They say it’s the best form of flattery, but in my opinion, blatantly ripping off someone else’s work is horrible and in this article I hope to showcase some of the worst of the worst as far as web design rip offs go. How many times have you seen 100 blogs all with the same free wordpress theme? That is not what I’m discussing here today because those are free to use. What I’m talking about is 100% (or close to it) design rip offs, from the layout, to the color, images and even xhtml/css coding. Its ridiculous what people think they can get away with today, and whats worse then just stealing the layout is that some of these rip off artists are claiming to be “web designers”!! Go figure.
Please take a minute to stumble, digg and float this article (buttons at the bottom of the article) so we can expose these rip off artists for what they are: pieces of filth.
Original: On Wired | Ripoff: Daniel Rico
This may not be a 100% rip off, but in my opinion, the similarities are too striking to leave this off the list. What do you think? Should this have made the list?
Original: Natalia Devalle | Ripoff: Ale
This is a disgrace to the design community as a whole. Natalia took the time to create an awesome portfolio layout just to have it ripped entirely from the design to the code. This really makes me sick to see something like this because this guy is calling himself a web designer.
Original: Deaxon | Ripoff: Lee Munroe
From the content down, these sites look different, but the main header, the big box with the flashing photos on the right and the text to the left of it are so remarkably close in style that I believe this one belongs on the list. Another “freelance web designer” too. Ugh!
Original: OnWired | Ripoff: Digital Internet Group
So again we’re featuring the ever popular On Wired group and another blatant ripoff to their design. Yet another “web design company” that is claiming “We are the Right Choice”. How horrible is that?
Original: Rusty Bones | Ripoff: Kasap Salih
It’s a shame that someone would take a really nice, clean website design and turn it into something as horrible as this rip off. The website that ripped the design is in another language (not English) but is about cock fighting so make sure you’re able to view stuff about this before you click into the losers site.
Original: Marius Roosendaal | Ripoff: Adam Spanier
How sad you must be to steal one of the best layouts a lot of people have seen in recent years. Not only has Marius been featured for the awesome layout of his site, theres also been countless talks about the javascript he uses to switch his site from day to night. Adam is a piece of trash and stole the entire thing, design, code and all.
Original: nclud | Ripoff: 7Vision
Montreal Web Design? 7vision has a serious case of denial or something because they are NO WEB DESIGNERS! Blatantly stealing the layout and structure of nclud and only changing the colors does NOT make you a web designer, it makes you a web design rip off artist. (I need to trademark that phrase or something lol).
Original: Clear Left | Ripoff: Taylor Police and Fire Retirement System
And people wonder why the police get a bad wrap? Now we can add website theft to the list of things the police department of Taylor Michigan has done. Go figure, they even have Prevent spelled wrong in their logo. What a bunch of idiots!
Original: 31three | Ripoff: Template Monster
Template Monster…. why? I know why! Because they’re “such a big company that it doesn’t really matter what they do because people will still purchase rip off designs from them” Yeah, Matt Brett even had his design lifted before from Template Monster.
Original: Elliot Jay Stocks | Ripoff: Macronizm
This rip off is from the amazing website of Elliot Jay Stocks. His website has been a placeholder for his creativity and his uniqueness for a while now and as it turns out, other people have had the same creativity and uniqueness as he has, except theirs came after him and blatantly ripped his entire website. Macronizm is despicable and should no longer ever be alive on the internet.
Original: Biola Undergrad | Ripoff: Daniëlle Houbrechts | Kruiden
The original version of this rip off can be seen here, but even still, the site uses the same structure and coding but only removed a few of the images and changed the header a bit. The “web design” is credited to WoordBeeld.be so lets all take a second to make fun of them
Original: 31three | Ripoff: DVD to iPhone
So Template Monster isn’t the only one coveting the amazing work at 31three now? This website totally rips off the coding as well as the background image itself to create a P.O.S. landing page for the DVD to iPhone converter software. How lovely.
The moral of the story
The moral of the story here is simple; don’t steal other peoples art work!
